Emergency plan

Coastal living means storms, slips and power cuts. A little preparation now means your household — and your street — copes far better later.

At a glance

  • 111 — emergency, fire or crime in progress.
  • 105 — non-urgent Police, or report at 105.police.govt.nz.
  • 3 days — minimum food, water and medication to keep at home.
  • 1 grab bag — near the door, ready to leave in a hurry.

Storms, slips and power cuts are part of coastal life. A short plan made now saves precious time when the weather turns — for your household and your whole street.

Have a household plan

Agree on where your household will meet, how you'll contact each other if phones are down, and who will check on children, older neighbours or pets.

Write it down and keep a copy on the fridge. Get Ready has a simple template you can fill in with the whole household in about fifteen minutes.

Home emergency supplies laid out by Auckland Emergency Management — water containers, food, torch, batteries and a grab bag

Get your home ready

Keep enough food and water for at least three days, plus torches, batteries, a battery or wind-up radio, warm clothing and any medication your household needs.

Know how to turn off your water, power and gas, and keep a grab bag near the door in case you have to leave in a hurry.

Know your local risks

Our coast is exposed to storm surge, coastal flooding, slips and long power outages. Auckland Emergency Management publishes hazard information and alerts for our area.

In an emergency, always call 111. For non-emergency Police matters, call 105 or report online.

Plan with your street

A neighbourhood that has already swapped phone numbers recovers much faster. Neighbourhood Support NZ publishes a Neighbourhood Emergency Resilience Plan you can complete as a group.

We can help your street run a short planning session — get in touch through the join form and we'll come to you.
